Damage to Brunel's railway bridge across the Thames

There is a tree growing out of the brickwork above the Sounding Arch:

A closer look shows damage to the parapet - this is why you should never let plants get established in brickwork.

The bridge is a scheduled national monument, so I would have hoped for better maintenance than this...

Network Rail has now responded to complaints on the condition of the bridge and has cut back the illustrated tree to stumps.

Brickwork / parapet damage has not yet been dealt with. Whether or not the stumps have been treated to kill the roots is not known.

Any resident / HTPS member who wishes to make further representations to Network Rail may wish to use its helpline on 08457 114141 to register their concern. This would help increase the likelihood of a completed repair within the foreseeable future.
